Panel Air Filters
This fiberglass air filter is among the most inexpensive types of air filters there are, and as a result it is the most popular. However, these filters do clog up more quickly than their counterparts, so it’s recommended that you replace them once a month during AC use. If you don’t have significant contaminants going through your home—such as pet dander or cigarette smoke—then you may be able to decrease this to every 3 months.
Pleated Air Filters
Pleated air filters are significantly better performing that the panel type. They are made from woven polyester, and keep out smaller particles as a result. Pleated air filters must not be too efficient for your system though, as then you could unintentionally block airflow into your home.
Permanent Air Filters
If you have a permanent air filter, then you shouldn’t need to change it (unless it begins to develop mold or mildew). However, it does need to be cleaned on a regular basis to keep it free of clogs. In general, this should be done every 2 months. You can clean it by using a garden hose with low water pressure, and be sure to allow the filter to dry out completely before replacing it.
